Most small business owners think that getting onto page 1 of Google for their primary keyphrases will never happen.

Well, unless they set up an Adwords account, that is.But paid results aren't the same as the organic results, right?

The organic results are the Holy Grail.

Ask small business owners
they think they'll never make page 1 and they'll usually say something along the lines of:

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Page 1 of Google - no worries

Most smaller businesses think getting onto Page 1 of Google for their primary keyphrases is a long shot. It's not.[/caption]

In fact, I'll take it one step further: getting onto
is easy.

All you need to do is one simple thing....

And if you can't create great content, create fairly good content because that will often be enough to get you over the line.

You see, Google is a content hungry whore.

If you feed her, she will reward you.

Name a keyphrase, any keyphrase

Further down this post I'll be giving you tips on how to master Google yourself.

First of all, though, I want to show you a couple of examples of how easy it can be to get to page 1 for whatever damned keyphrases you want.

Soon enough you'll get to the point where you'll say, "I'm going to be on page 1 for such and such a keyphrase in a day or two."

And then you will be.

I'm not kidding, either. Let's look at the first example.

Page 1 of Google: Soho PR agencies

The other day I thought that, as a PR agency that's based in Soho, we may as well be on page 1 of Google for 'Soho PR agency' and 'Soho PR agencies'.

So I wrote a quick post targeting thesekeyphrases.

24 hours later and hey presto! We went from nowhere straight to third from the top on page 1 of Google.

(The search in the screengrab, below, was carried out in Incognito mode on Google Chrome, so hasn't been affected by my search preferences).

Page 1 of Google for 'Soho PR agency'

Hmmm, what keyphrase shall I target today? How about Soho PR agencies? OK, let's do it. 24 hours later and there we are, third from the top, page 1 of Google.[/caption]

As you can see, I got to this position by writing a PR tip and framing it as one that came from a Soho PR agency.

The post wasn't particularly long and it wasn't what I would call exceptional content, but it was good enough, well optimised and it got me where I wanted to get.

And since it's been there our site has had a fair bit of traffic via that post.

Best UK PR agencies

Onto the second example.

Another keyphrase I thought I'd target recently was 'Best UK PR agencies'. Hardly appropriate as we're a shambles, but hey it can't hurt.

I drafted a slightly contrarian blog post, involving me banging on aboutwhythe
are in fact the worst pr agencies and that companies should avoid them at all costs.

24 hours later and we hit the jackpot.

Here it is in all its glory....

Page 1 of Google - no worries

The first two PR agencies listed on page 1 of Google (as of 09/02/13) were Just In Time PR and, errr, Just In Time PR. The three results above are all PR Week so don't really count![/caption]

You'll see that we actually have two posts on Page 1.

This is because I wrote a follow-up post talking about how quickly the first post had got to Page 1, involving me idly pontificating that
at heart.

So page 1 of Google, two results, both hoovering up traffic.

You can do this, too

Anyway, enough of us. Let's focus on you.

The best thing about all this is that you can do it for your firm or organisation, too.

You don't need to be a fantastic SEO to achieve fantastic SEO.All you need to do is regularly allocate a bit of time to producinggreat content and optimise it to hell and back.

For most people, the home for this content will be their blog but it could also be another section of their site, e.g. a news page.

Top Content Tips to Master Google

Here are my top tips to getting onto page 1 of Google.

Clearly this list isn't exhaustive but if you cover these basics you'll notice a difference quite quickly.

Time and effort

To cut a long story short (because this post is getting too long now and I've had enough), the key to dominating page 1 of Google for your keyphrases is to invest the time and effort to produce exceptional, rich and informative copy, and to do so regularly.

Crucially, you also need to make sure you have followed some fundamental optimisation strategies, some of which are above.

If you don't optimise your content, then no matter how good it is, you'll be wasting your time.

Do both, though, and you will be amazed at the results.
